Jan Street Can - Planned Improvements

Listen

Jan Street Project

Jan Street is located between Newton Central Shopping Centre and shops to the west in the area called Newton Court Shopping Centre. It is currently a vehicular and pedestrian thoroughfare.

Jan Street Location MapIn 2013 Council asked land owners and tenants in the retail precinct, visitors to the precinct and the broader community, what was needed to make Jan Street a safer, more pleasant location and ideas for how the entire retail precinct could better meet community needs in the future.

Early in 2015 the community provided feedback on a proposed concept plan and after considering the feedback a final concept was approved by Council.  In July 2015 Council applied for and was successful in its application for matching funds through the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure Places for People grant program.

Early in 2016 Council deferred commencement of the construction for 12 months pending investigations into undergrounding the low voltage power lines as part of the works.  After considering quotes for the works it was decided that this would not be included at this point in time and in early 2017 plans were put in place to commence construction in February 2017.

Planned Improvements

Jan Street ProjectThe improvements aim to upgrade the Jan Street streetscape to meet the community's vision for how it can function, look and feel. Jan Street will be a safer, more pedestrian friendly environment with space for people to gather, sit, interact, be entertained, and socialise.

It will provide the infrastructure, such as power, water and lighting, to enable a wide variety of uses.  Ultimately, the usability and function will change from a 'thoroughfare' to a 'destination' that can successfully function day and night. The project will improve use of Jan Street for frail aged and persons with a disability by making physical changes for improved access and mobility whilst still allowing for vehicular movement.
