Solid Waste Levy Increase
An increase to the State Government imposed Solid Waste Levy will cost the average ratepayer an additional $11 in rates in 2017/2018.
The Solid Waste Levy is a fee imposed by the State Government for every tonne of waste that is sent to landfill. It has increased by 146% since 2009/2010, placing a significant financial burden on Council and its ratepayers.
Shortly after Council adopted its budget for the 2016/2017 financial year, the State Government announced that the Solid Waste Levy would increase again by another $14/tonne from 1 September 2016 to $76/tonne, and rise by another $11/tonne from 1 July 2017. This represents an additional increase of 40% within the space of a year, adding an extra cost to the community that Council had not budgeted for in 2016/2017 of $125,600.
These increases in the levy along with the one proposed from 1 July 2018 (an additional $118,500 per year) will represent an additional increase in rates of 0.7%.
